Samuel Lo, who began his career as an electrical engineer, focuses on patent litigation, licensing and counseling. As a member of ARE litigation teams, he is involved in the early phases of the litigation including developing an early case assessment, conducting prior art searches, drafting invalidity and non-infringement contentions and performing claims analysis and construction. He works on patents involving computers and electronics, communications technology, compression technology, image processing, medical devices, lasers and materials patents.

His litigation and industry background is the foundation for his counseling regarding licensing including opinion work, due diligence studies, licensing negotiations and contract drafting. He advises clients on the strength and value of their patent portfolios and the IP of others; infringement avoidance; and on the business and patent risks regarding their licensing strategies.

As part of the firm’s secondment program, Mr. Lo worked as patent counsel in Japan for the consumer electronics division of Panasonic for two years, and reviewed and drafted agreements and advised on licensing and cross-licensing strategies for the company’s patent portfolio.

Mr. Lo joined Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP as a Summer Associate in 2007 and returned to the firm as an Associate in 2008. As a “tinkerer” himself, Mr. Lo has undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering and worked for six years as a hardware design test and diagnostics engineer at the R&D center for UTStarcom, Inc.
